Your questions

We have tried to answer your frequently asked questions about CrossFit below. If you have any questions we have not covered, please contact us but lets start with the most common – What is CrossFit?

So here is Tony to to give you a 3 min overview…

What’s the difference between CrossFit and a regular gym?

The main difference between us and a corporate gym is that we provide personalised coaching and feedback for every exercise, throughout every workout. You’ll develop proper movement, form and technique to ensure you get maximum benefit and avoid injury.

The other big difference is in the level of intensity you can find within a CrossFit workout. The sense of camaraderie and community in our group classes means you can push yourself further and get much more out of a session than you would at a Globo-Gym, or training by yourself.

Are CrossFit workouts really tough?

CrossFit workouts are designed so that they always provide a challenge, but are never impossible. They are infinitely scalable and can be tailored to your level of strength and fitness – but everyone works through it together, as a group.

We’ll help you balance good form, safety and intensity to get the most from your CrossFit workouts. In fact, we’ll let you in on a secret: everyone feels a little apprehensive about tackling a WOD (workout of the day) at first: but if it was easy, you wouldn’t get results and you’d soon get bored!

What will I do in the class?

Aside from the usual warm-up and cool-down, the core of a class is the Workout of the Day or WOD.

What is a WOD?

A WOD (Workout of the Day) is the set of movements that is prescribed for a particular day. It’s a combination of functional movements – lifts, squats, press-ups, dips, rowing or running – that’s designed to give an intense and effective workout of around 30 minutes in length. Some well-known WODs even have names – watch out for ‘Angie’ and ‘Grace’!

Once you have done one a particular WOD, it’s likely to be a long time before you encounter the exact same one again. Variety is a really important principle within CrossFit.

Do I need some experience or level of fitness?

Absolutely not! CrossFit is scalable for any person of any fitness level. We believe that everyone has a right to improve their fitness, regardless of their current level.

We have also developed a programme to help you get your nutrition right. It means that the common problems after intense exercise (such as muscle aches, poor sleep, tiredness, lethargy and low energy levels) can be successfully managed and often improved. We will help you reach your optimal health and consequently achieve your fitness and performance goals in all areas of life.

You have no gym machines - are you waiting for a delivery?

No! The only machines we use are the rowers. CrossFit is about functional movements natural to your body. Machines force your body into unnatural movement patterns and artificially isolate muscles, applying excessive force to your joints.  You’ll use ropes, pull-up bars, weights, kettlebells and medicine balls – but not much more.

But you do have a shower and changing rooms, right?

Of course – we’re not totally primitive! We also have a café area with vending machines and sofas for your post – WOD chillout.

What is the On Ramp?

The On Ramp is your complete introduction to CrossFit, designed to make you familiar with all the movements and techniques you need to tackle any WOD.

Completing the On Ramp means you are ready to take part in the main classes.

When is the On Ramp?

The On Ramp is run as 3 x 90min classes over a week, learning the fundamentals of CrossFit. Normally starting the third week of every month – Monday, Wed, Friday 19.00-20.30. Once completed you will then be able to take part in the main classes. See our membership page for cost options and booking.

I can't make the On Ramp - is there any alternative?

The On Ramp course is essential for getting familiar with the movements and techniques of CrossFit. You will not be able to skip it unless you can show existing competence in the fundamentals of CrossFit.

If you are not able to attend the On Ramp course, we may be able to teach you the fundamentals through series of personal training sessions.
